Power Virginia’s Energy Future — Support Distributed Solar
Virginia is at a turning point. With the launch of the Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Task Force, whose creation was supported by the Virginia Distributed Solar Alliance to remove barriers to local solar and energy resources across the state, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to modernize our energy system.
This Task Force is chaired by Virginia’s Chief Energy Officer Josephus Allmond, signaling strong alignment with the Governor’s energy strategy and a clear pathway to meaningful reform.
Through DSA representation in the membership of the Task Force, we hope to recommend public policy changes to expanding solar, storage, and local energy solutions across the Commonwealth.
Why This Moment Matters
For years, distributed solar has faced structural barriers that limit growth and increase costs for schools, local governments, and businesses. At the same time, large monopoly utilities Dominion Energy and Appalachian Power continue to deploy well-funded legal and lobbying teams to shape outcomes.
Now, the center of gravity is shifting—from litigation to policy.
With input from the Distributed Solar Alliance, the DER Task Force creates a real opportunity to:
- Remove barriers to distributed solar and battery energy storage
- Expand market access and competition
- Strengthen grid resilience and energy security
- Lower long-term energy costs for Virginians
